Antigua and Barbuda are located in the middle of the Leeward Islands, part of the Lesser Antilles, between the Caribbean and the Atlantic.
Historians believe that Antigua wa first settled by hunter-gatherer Amerindians called the Ciboney with the earliest settlements around 3100 BC.
The English are said to have settled in Antigua in 1632 and ruled from 1632 to 1981.
The islands became an independent state within the Commonwealth of Nations on November 1, 1981.
Most of Barbuda was distroyed by Hurricane Irma in 2017 and most people were evacuated to Antigua.
